Reduce, reuse, recycle says council

Nearly two-thirds of all household waste could be recycled and while many of us are already very good at recycling, even the smallest change in our every day actions can help the environment. The aim of the national campaign is to get everyone to think about what else they could be recycling.

Launching ‘Recycle Week’ in Northern Ireland, Environment Minister Alex Attwood said, “Recycling is one of the many ways we can make our local area a better place to live and ‘Recycle Week’ is the perfect time to do this.

“I believe that Northern Ireland should aim to be the leader of recycling on these islands. Whilst we have made a lot of progress in recent years we still have a long way to go to reach and indeed exceed the 50% target that we need to meet by 2020.

Banbridge District Council Chairman, Councillor Joan Baird, said, “Our district has an impressive recycling record, ranking first in NI and seventh in the UK. But that does not mean we still can’t continue to improve on this. I urge residents throughout the district to think about what they are throwing away, reduce the amount of waste they produce, reuse items where possible and recycle as much as they can, thus saving money and doing something positive for the environment.”
