Public to be consulted on extra hour’s parking

AN extension to Dromore town centre’s one-hour parking limit is being considered, subject to wider public consultation.

News of the move emerged after a meeting on Friday between Roads Service officials and a number of Dromore interest groups.

Among those to attend the meeting, in Basil McCrea’s Market Square constituency office, were representatives of Dromore In Action, Doing it for Dromore and the Dromore Chamber of Commerce, as well as a number of unaffiliated traders.

Ulster Unionist Councillor Olive Mercer, who recently added her voice to those calling for the one-hour parking restriction to be extended to two hours, revealed Roads Service had agreed to consider a review of the time limit, with a view to extending it by the requested hour.

She stressed however, that any such proposed extension would first be subject to wider public consultation.

“Obviously,” she said, “it will depend on it being acceptable to the greater percentage of people.”

From a personal standpoint Mrs. Mercer welcomed the news as a potential first step toward a move she believes will support local traders.

“Hopefully,” she said, “the majority will be in favour of it.”

It is understood that the consultation process is expected to get underway by the end
