Council backs Big Spring Clean

The event is being run in conjunction with the Department of Environment’s ‘Rethink Waste Campaign’ and the Belfast Telegraph and takes place from 8th to 17th April.

Helping launch the campaign, Environment Minister Edwin Poots said, ““The success of last year’s ‘Big Spring Clean’ has shown that the people of Northern Ireland care about where they live and take a lot of pride in their local environment.

“By supporting TIDY Northern Ireland in such an active and positive way, we can all make a difference, no matter how small, to protect and improve our environment and help make Northern Ireland a better place to live, work and invest.”

The anti-litter charity is asking individuals and groups to help spruce up Northern Ireland and freshen up tired looking street corners, beaches, fields and roadsides, ready for everyone to enjoy throughout summer.

Spokesperson Patricia Magee said, “Often little changes like ensuring you take home rubbish so it can be recycled, reused or disposed of properly can make a huge impact on the attractiveness of public spaces.

“It isn’t only about looking pretty; there is a very real cost to everyone in Northern Ireland, both financially and in health terms. We spend £34 million a year in street cleaning alone and, although there are no definitive figures, it is accepted there is also a negative impact on well-being and quality of life.

“It is a disgrace that there are people who treat Northern Ireland as one giant litter bin and this campaign is a fantastic opportunity to tell them they should clean up their act and stop costing us a fortune.

“Anyone ignoring the message could receive a £50 fine now, or an even heavier fine once the new ‘Clean Neighbourhoods’ legislation comes into force.”
