Eighth annual LCM event looms

Dromore High School will this week play host to the eighth annual charity concert by the London College of Music’s centre in town.

The Dromore centre itself is in its 17th year of promoting music and the arts among young and old in the town and surrounding area.

The LCM’s local representative, Mrs Sonya Russell, who lived and taught in Dromore from 1996-2003, is, as ever, organising the charity concert, taking place this year on Thursday (April 18).

She explained: “Local teachers can enter their students thee times a year for examinations with LCM.

“These examinations cover a wide range of musical instruments as well as singing, Speech and Drama and Music Theatre.

“Performers at the concert will include those who have taken Piano, Singing, Guitar, and Speech exams in the past year.

“There will be a varied programme ranging from exam pieces to popular composers of the day. All ages will be taking part, from the very young and those who are just beginning their musical career, to the more advanced in their particular field of the arts.”

Special Guest on the evening will be Mrs Sheila Hemming, one of LCM’s Examiners, who will be at the Dromore Centre to examine for the College.

She will also present awards, including the “Sonya Russell Cup of Achievement” and the “Music Galleria Shield of Excellence”. Mrs Russell is looking forward to the evening and invites all who have an interest in music, speech and theatre to go along and enjoy the entertainment provided, she said, by talented young people from the town and further afield.

There will also be a selection of LCM Exam books and other music books - provided by Lisburn’s Music Calleria - available to purchase on the evening.

The charity benefiting from the proceeds of this year’s concert is the “Yad Vashem Memorial” in Israel.

Said Mrs Russell: “Yad Vashem is a memorial museum to victims of the Holocaust and provides valuable educational programmes across the world in order that the atrocities committed during WW2 are never forgotten.”

Thursday’s concert begins at 7.30pm and tickets - £5 and £3.50 (concession)- are available at the door on the night.
