'˜Dromore views not acknowledged' says councillor as steel wins over wood in town park bridge plans

Plans for investment in Dromore Town Park mark a bridge too far for some local councillors, who have aired '˜material' concerns and voiced fears that local views are being dismissed.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council is understood to have approved proposals to install two steel bridges in the park rather than the wooden spans preferred by some.

Dromore DUP Councillor Hazel Gamble was one who felt wooden structures more fitting, and she was not alone, she said, claiming her view reflected that held by a number of local community groups.

She spoke out on the subject following a meeting last night of the full council.

“I was extremely disappointed,” she said, “that my proposal for two wooden-type bridges in Dromore park was voted down and that two steel bridges will be what replaces what we currently have.

“While I welcome the investment in the park, it was my and my party’s view, as well as that of the other Dromore councillors, that a more wooden-type structure was more in keeping with a rural town park and would be more aesthetically pleasing in a park environment.

“Indeed, community groups within the town were also of this mind and I found it very disingenuous that some councillors refused to acknowledge the will of people from within the local area.

“Whilst every attempt was made to overturn this decision sadly it would seem that local voices were not listened to.”
