Dromore man was found asleep on pavement near a primary school

Two hours after he told police he was getting a taxi home a 51-year-old drunken man was found asleep on the pavement near a primary school in Dromore.

Nathanial Wilkinson, Ballygowan Road, Dromore, was fined £150 last Thursday at Banbridge Magistrates Court for simple drunk on March 27 this year.

He was also ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that at 9.30am police received a call about a man sleeping at the town hall in Dromore.

They spoke to Wilkinson who said he was getting a taxi to take him home.

At 11.30am they received further calls about the defendant drinking from a bottle of vodka near a primary school on the Banbridge Road, Dromore.

When they arrived they found him asleep on the footpath.

He had a bottle under his shirt and when he tried to get to his feet he fell to the ground on two occasions.

Wilkinson had to be helped to his feet and he was totally incapable of talking. He was arrested for simple drunk.

A solicitor representing the defendant said all his offences related to alcohol and he had struggled with alcohol.

He added that Wilkinson had simply consumed too much alcohol.

He was not usually a person who caused annoyance to the public and he would apologise to the police and the court for this incident.
