Dromore group on the lookout for leaders

First Dromore Scout Group has no shortage of young members to fill out the ranks of Squirrels, Beavers, Scouts and Explorers.

It is, however, in need of a new roof for its Ballynahinch Road hall and, equally importantly, an influx of leaders to safeguard the Scouting tradition locally.

Our pictures show former members of the local group as they were in 2007 and the mid-1990s.

A spokesperson had this message for former members and potential newcomers alike: “Take a close look at the photo of the First Dromore Scout Group taken sometime around 1995. Do you recognise yourself?

“Even if you’re not in this photo perhaps you look back with fondness to your time in the scouting movement and wonder if kids today enjoy it as much as you did?

“Well the answer is a resounding ‘Yes’!

“But First Dromore needs help to maintain the scouting tradition in the Ballynahinch Road hall, so that’s where you could help; we’d love to hear from any past scouts or wannabe (sic) scout leaders who could spare one evening a week during term time to help the existing leaders.

“Don’t worry if you don’t have any experience; all training will be provided. What we really need is enthusiasm and a desire to help kids experience the camaraderie and skills that go with being a Scout.

Meanwhile,the local group has been busy raising funds this year with a view to replacing the roof on the scout hall. To date they have raised more than £3000 but need another £5000.

“So there’ll be plenty of opportunity to support their efforts, starting in September with a sponsored walk in Hillsborough Forest Park,” the spokesperson said.
