Dromore graduate hailed ‘a real inspiration’

A YOUNG Dromore man hailed as “a real inspiration” had plenty to celebrate not only as one of a number of students to recently graduate at the South Eastern Regional College, but as recipient of the Robert McRoberts Cup.

The trophy, for ‘Enhancing the Student Experience’ went to graduate Jamie McFarland, who gained his HND in Applied Biology and now plans to go to university to study Physiotherapy.

A college spokesperson said Jamie’s classmates described him as “a real inspiration” due to his tireless attitude and his “endless enthusiasm” during his course.

“I am delighted ,” said Jamie, “to have completed the HND course at South Eastern Regional College.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my lecturers at SERC, who were very supportive and encouraging.”

Also among those celebrating success was Dromara student William Wallace, who with Lisburn classmates Jonathan Doran and Carl Richmond, was awarded a Higher National Certifcate in Construction.

As well as receiving their graduation certificate, the students were also awarded the Dunlop Trophy for Excellence in Project Work; the team worked to develop for Lisburn City Council a creative concept to be sited within the Lagan Corridor area

Their innovative and unique concept of a Lagan Valley Adventure Park won high praise and was named ‘Best Concept’ by the council.

More than 1,300 people – students, family, friends and tutors - packed Belfast’s Waterfront Hall for the recent ‘Transformation’-themed graduation ceremony, celebrating the efforts and academic achievements of the ‘Class of 2012’.

College Principal and Chief Executive, Ken Webb, said, “The annual Graduation Celebration is a highlight in the college calendar; it showcases students’ achievements at Higher Education level in a variety of programme areas.”

He added, “I would like to congratulate each graduate. Today is a fitting celebration of the hard work and effort given to your studies over the past number of years. I wish you well for your future and hope that your time at SERC will stand by you in your future career. I would like to wish all of our 2012 graduates well as they now progress to careers, locally and nationally, or to further study.”

This year’s guest speaker, UTV’s Colm McAlinden, praised the hard work and commitment of both students and tutors.
