Dromore arch opening looms

There was a reminder this week of the upcoming event, due to get under way at 6.30pm on the night, with the parade beginning at 7pm.

Brethren from neighbouring districts are due to attend in support of the 530-strong host district.

Organisers appealed in recent weeks for Lambeg drummers in particular to turn out in numbers enough to line all of Market Square and play in unison as the highlight of the night.

The arch is believed to be Dromore’s fourth successive Orange arch and its opening bucks the trend that has seen the number of arches decline in recent years.

A spokesperson said recently: “The first district arch was opened in 1911, some two years before work began on the local Orange hall.

“This was followed by another arch on July 5, 1958 and again on July 8, 1967.”

Anyone who wishes to support what the district characterises as a “progressive and forward-looking project” can do so by way of donation - “no matter how small” - at Nelson-Singleton Solicitors in Gallows Street, Dromore.

Worshipful Brother Lord Rogan of Lower Iveagh will officially open the arch on Saturday.

Worshipful Brother Rev Alistair Smyth will perform the dedication ceremony.

Said the spokesperson: “All brethren and drummers will be made most welcome and should form up on Banbridge Road, Dromore from 6.30pm, with the parade commencing at 7pm. Ample car parking is available. Musical entertainment will be provided in the Square from 6pm. Everyone welcome.”
