Driver did not realise his insurance had been cancelled

When he was stopped by police a 24-year-old did not realise his insurance had been cancelled and on the tot up system he was banned from driving for six months.

Tonay Idriz, Keelmount Mews, Portadown, pleaded guilty himself last Friday when he appeared at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

For not having insurance he was fined £300 and given six penalty points.

With six points already on his licence he was banned for six months on the tot up system.

Fines of £60 were imposed for having a defective tyre and having a defective light.

The court heard that on April 21 this year a police patrol on the Dungannon Road, Portadown, noticed a car in front of them slow down as it approached the junction with the Derrylatiff Road.

No brake lights were showing and they pulled the car over. They noticed the front offside tyre was defective.

Idriz produced an insurance document dated until August 11 this year but police checks revealed it had been cancelled on March 15.

The defendant said he didn’t know about the insurance being cancelled.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said it was a strict liability offence and this was the defendant’s second conviction for not having insurance.
