Drinking 'silly thing to do'

A BANBRIDGE man caught drinking from a bottle of Buckfast Wine in a public place, has been fined £50 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £91.

Sam Kelly from Victoria Street, appeared before the local Departmental Court last Thursday morning.

The offence had been detected on 18 October 2008 at Rathfriland Street.

Kelly, who had no solicitor, told the court that he apologised for his actions and admitted it was a "silly thing to do."

District Judge Mr Paul Copeland told unemploed Kelly, "You are from Banbridge and you know the rules here. Let this be your first and last appearance in court."

He gave Kelly eight weeks to pay his fine and when pressed for a further extension, Mr Copeland said no, adding, "If you have money for Buckfast, you have money for fines."
