Mark Anthony Curran (30), Grove Meadows, Banbridge, was also fined £200 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy. He admitted driving with excess alcohol on his breath on December 20 last year.

If he completes a course for drink driving the ban would be reduced to nine months.

The court heard that at 2am on the Huntly Road, Curran lost control of his car on a right hand bend and struck a fence before leaving the scene.

Police located him and noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath. An evidential test gave a reading of 64.

A solicitor said that Curran had intended to stay with his girlfriend but decided to drive home. He had only travelled a short distance.

He added that the defendant was deeply ashamed of his behaviour.
