Drink driver from Maghera found hiding behind a shed after crash

A motorist who was said by the prosecution to have narrowly missed hitting a car before colliding with the central reservation, was jailed for five months at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

Vaughan Clarke Porter (44), Ballynahone Road, Maghera, was also banned from driving for five years for driving while having consumed excess alcohol.

Porter was fined a total of £200 for failing to give police information and having no insurance.

He was released on bail pending an appeal against the prison sentence.

A PPS lawyer said the incident arose out of an incident at Hillhead Road, Toomebridge, on the evening of January 30.

She said Porter ran off from the scene of the accident and was later found by the police hiding behind a shed.

District Judge Alan White commented that Porter was more than three times the limit and continued to deny his involvement.
