Dogs given a second chance at Millvale

THANKS to the combined efforts of willing volunteers at Millvale Animal Sanctuary, in conjunction with the Assisi 'Chance of a Lifetime' scheme, a number of homeless dogs have been given a second opportunity in life.

The scheme transports animals to the Dogs Trust or Blue Cross charities in England who have a dedicated team of professionals working to re-home them with a compatible owner, thus increasing their chance of a home for life.

A total of 150 dogs this year have found their chance of a lifetime through Millvale Animal Sanctuary. A large proportion of these dogs were rescued from pounds including Carrickfergus, Carryduff, Bessbrook and Craigavon.

These dogs would have otherwise been humanely destroyed as council policy stipulates a time limit as to how long the dogs can be kept.

Millvale would like to thank the dedicated team of volunteers who help transport dogs on a regular basis. Volunteers from the above mentioned pounds work together to help transportation of the dogs to and from Millvale where they have all their basis needs met.

"Special thanks must go to Carol Lamberton of Rathfriland Vet Clinic for her assistance throughout the years in preparing the dogs for their journies and to all the volunteer dog walkers, foster carers and fund raisers who play a vital role within Millvale," said a Sanctuary spokesperson.

"Millvale is a private sanctuary and gets no government support. The dogs are vet checked, treated for fleas and wormed before they leave the Sanctuary. There is a considerable cost involved in preparing the animals for their journey and this cannot be done without help from you the public.

"All donations, however big or small, are gratefully accepted. Donations can be made directly to the sanctuary - contact Sharon on 07547315677 - or if preferable contact Rathfriland Vet Clinic and donate to the ongoing treatment of the animals."

The sanctuary is inviting everyone to their Fun Dog Show on Saturday June 5 in Jollyes car park, Castlewellan Road, Banbridge.

Registration is at 1.30pm. There will be classes to suit all dogs, small to large, puppies to veterans. First, second and third prizes will be given in all classes.

Professional photographer Susan Collins will be in the store offering a free pet portrait sitting.
