Dog Ears pleased atOscar nod to Puffin Rock partner

The editorial director of Londonderry multi-media animator Dog Ears has congratulated the firm’s ‘Puffin Rock’ partner Cartoon Saloon, on its Oscar nomination for its cartoon feature ‘Song of the Sea.’

Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon, which was previously nominated for an Academy Award for ‘The Secret of Kells’ is once more in contention for its tale of a selkie’s journey from the sea to the city.

Laura Campbell, the editorial director of the local animator, said: “We’re really pleased for them. Some of the animators who worked on ‘Song of the Sea’ have been working on ‘Puffin Rock’ with ourselves here in Bishop Street.

“The director, Tomm Moore, along with Lily Bernard, is one of the original creators of ‘Puffin Rock.’ It was great to see it finally go out on RTÉ this week.”

‘Song of the Sea’ features the voices and music of well-known Irish actors and musicians including Brendan Gleeson, Jon Kenny, Pat Shortt, Lisa Hannigan and Kila.

The studio, which made it, are co-producers with Dog Ears, of the heart-warming adventures of the puffling siblings Pip and Baba, which will soon be aired on Nick Jr. in the UK and went out this week on RTÉjr.

‘Puffin Rock’ has been scored by local record label Smalltown America, and is narrated by Chris O’Dowd.

“It’s been a long process and it was great to have the first series start on RTÉ this week,” said Ms Campbell. “It’s early days but the feedback we’ve been getting sofar has been really good.”
