Dobson named UUP Woman of the Year

LOCAL woman Joanne Dobson has been named 2010 Ulster Unionist Party Woman of the Year.

The recently elected Craigavon councillor, who originally hails from the Banbridge district, was given the honour at the party’s annual conference last weekend.

Praising Ms Dobson, the party’s development officer Sandra Overend said, “She canvassed in snow, ice and rain, in truly bitter conditions in January of this year and she won by an amazing 64 per cent of the vote.”

Commending the work done to “change the gender balance of political representatives” within the party, Sandra said, “Now as we look forward to the imminent Westminster Election, I am pleased to say that we have four excellent women candidates.

Accepting her award, Jo-Anne said that it was a “tremendous honour”.

“This has been a very challenging and rewarding year for me, and more broadly for Ulster Unionism,” she said.

re-election

“From the successful re-election of Jim Nicholson to the European Parliament and my own success in Craigavon, we have demonstrated that the Ulster Unionist Party is fighting fit and ready for Westminster.

“We in the Ulster Unionist Party, in conjunction with our Conservative colleagues, look forward to providing real representation for the people of Northern Ireland on a national stage.”
