Deans should recognise importance of museum

At one time I believed that the young councillor Timothy Deans was one of the more dynamic, sensible and progressive members of a rather indecisive, dull and generally geriatric Coleraine Borough Council.

Boy was I wrong!

Over the last few weeks we have been treated to a series of rants concerning his views on public art, museums and Mountsandel.

What has happened to him? He has become something of a “grumpy old man” and as such completely out on a limb as far as his views go.

Take a look around you Timothy and note that public art, sculptures, museums and interpretative centres have, and are, springing up all around Northern Ireland because many communities are wanting to move forward and recognise that their shared history and cultures can benefit all and help increase the tourism and visitor spend in their area.

As the oldest known settlement of man on this island the Coleraine area is crying out for a museum which can interpret our Mesolithic, Celtic, Viking, Norman and Plantation heritage.

This has to be done, perhaps at some cost, but I am certain that most people are supportive of spending on such a project and perhaps will vote accordingly at the next elections to ensure a younger, forward thinking and more dynamic Council. I certainly hope so.
