Woman sexually assaulted in town park

THE people of Dromore have been left in shock after a woman in her 20s was sexually assaulted at the town park on Sunday night.

Police said they received a report of the incident just before 10pm on Sunday, and were told a woman had been subjected to a sexual assault by a male “in the area of Mills Park”.

Locals have been left outraged by the attack in the park which is regularly used by local families, and is home to a children’s playground.

A number of representatives for the area expressed their shock after the incident, and urged people to contact police if they had any information on what happened.

UUP councillor Olive Mercer said the news will almost certainly worry those who use the park.

“I was completely shocked to hear that such an incident took place in Dromore,” said Mrs Mercer. “People should be able to walk in their local park without fear of attack, People will now likely be wary of walking alone, especially at night-time and that is a sad situation.”

But DUP councillor Hazel Gamble said she is hopeful people will not be deterred from enjoying their local area.

“I would not want to scaremonger people - but I understand there will be concerns after this incident.

“My thoughts are with the young girl and her family and, after speaking with local police who are investigating the situation, I hope people can continue to feel safe in their local area by taking suitable precautions as best they can when out walking.”

Sinn Fein councillor Paul Gribben said the situation is very worrying indeed.

“This is a big shock for the people of the area - the man who has done this is potentially on the loose so people will naturally worry.
