Organised fight planned for Friday-say police

POLICE in Londonderry have made a plea to parents, schools and community groups to be vigilant after receiving information leading them to believe another organised fight is due to take place in the city on Friday.

The recent upsurge in such incidents has led police to warn that it is only matter of time before someone is seriously hurt or killed if the trend continues.

Organised fights in the city have previously been arranged by young people using social media networks and phone applications such as Blackberry Messenger. This has resulted in large groups of males and females to either participate or watch these fights.

The city’s leading police officer, Chief Inspector Garry Eaton, yesterday said: “We are appealing to help put a stop to these fights. The potential for serious injury cannot be underestimated. Younger children in particular could find themselves being drawn into a situation that is potentially very dangerous. It only takes one punch to bring about the possibility of lives being destroyed and families wrecked.”
