Michaela accused walks free

THE trial of those accused of the murder of Michaela McAreavey could begin soon, according to the Inspector in charge of the case.

It is understood the Director of Public Prosecutions in Mauritius will decide whether or not Michaela’s husband John, Tullylish club cpatain, will be called as a witness.

Last week hotel room attendant Raj Theekoy, who had been charged with conspiracy to murder, was released after agreeing to testify against his co-accused. Inspector Ranjit Jokhoo of the Mauritius police said Theekoy “heard and saw a lot of thing and his evidence would be important to the prosecution”.

Michaela, who had married John in December, was found dead in their room while on honeymoon at the luxury Legends Hotel in January.

The 27-year-old schoolteacher was killed less than two weeks after their wedding. The couple had been due to set up home in Laurencetown where they had already bought a house in Roes Hill. Two hotel workers have been charged with Michaela’s murder. She is thought to have stumbled across two people in her room when she returned from a poolside meal with her new husband to fetch biscuits from her case.
