A Rathfriland man has appeared in court charged with attempting to steal a sat nav system from a car.

Matthew Mitchell (18) from Knock Terrace also faces a number of other charges including disorderly behaviour, resisting a police constable, assaulting an officer and criminal damage involving a Kia car.

The alleged offences occurred on 18 January at Cross Heights, Rathfriland and a police officer connected Mitchell to the charges at last week’s local Magistrates Court.

A PPS prosecutor told the court that the charges were settled and the case was adjourned for one week.

District Judge Mr Paul Copeland imposed a number of bail conditions including a curfew from 10pm to 8am, and told he must have no contact by any means with the injured party.

Mitchell must not enter Cross Heights and he is not permitted to consume alcohol.

Furthermore he must submit to a preliminary breath test if requested by police and reside at Knock Terrace where bail checks will be carried out.

He was released on his own bail of £500.
