When a verbal argument turned physical a 34-year-old man punched his partner and grabbed her by the neck.
Roain Louis Eyres, whose bail address was Morning Star Hostel, Divis Street, Belfast, had admitted, at a previous court, unlawful assault on May 17 this year.
The case was adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.
Outlining the facts a public prosecutor said police went to Oakgrove in Banbridge to deal with a domestic incident.
They spoke to the injured party who said she and her partner, the defendant, had been involved in a verbal argument which turned physical.
He had punched her and grabbed her by the throat.
Eyres told police that it was self-defence after she had hit him with the bottom of the bed, which was a steel frame.
A barrister representing the defendant said he had made admissions at an early stage and he would benefit from some probation supervision.
He added that the couple were now reconciled and Eyres hoped to move back into the family home.
District Judge, Rosalie Prytherch, said this sort of violence could never be condoned and particularly where children were present it was reprehensible. Imposing a 16 month probation order she told the Eyres he would have to co-operate in any programme recommended by probation.
