A Magherafelt man said by his solicitor to have been found “staggering about drunk in town”, was placed on probation for 12 months when he appeared at the local Magistrates Court last Wednesday.

Christopher McPeake (30), of Piney Hill, admitted a charge of disorderly behaviour at Meeting Street on December 7.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan remarked that the defendant had been given a suspended jail sentence and three days later he committed this offence.

Defence solicitor Stephen Atherton said it was inevitable that McPeake would attract the attention of the police staggering around drunk in the middle of the day.

Mr Atherton said the defendant has never had the benefit of guidance from the Probation Service, especially in relation to his alcohol issues, and he urged the court to dispose of the matter in that way.
