Children buzzing after ‘Bee Safe’ event

Local primary school children were given some potentially lifesaving advice at the annual Bee Safe event which was held last week.

The event was organised by Banbridge Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) working with Banbridge District Council’s Good Relations officer, designated and local partners.

Around 300 P7 pupils from 14 local primary schools gathered at Seapatrick Parish Centre for ‘Bee Safe 2013’ last week.

The pupils who attended the two day event are now buzzing with knowledge on how to keep themselves safe thanks to this multi-agency community safety initiative which gave children the chance to learn some key messages.

The event aims to encourage our ten and eleven year olds to adopt good safety habits and to learn about a wide range of safety issues in a fun and interactive way.

Mr Jonathan Murphy, Vice Chair of Banbridge PCSP, commented, “This is the 9th consecutive year that Bee Safe has been held in Banbridge and it continues to be a very popular educational initiative, conveying so many important safety messages to a young audience in a short space of time through the use of interactive learning experiences.

“The secret to its success is that it is delivered in a way that both the pupils and teachers really enjoy the learning experience.”

At this year’s event focus was on stranger danger, kitchen hazards, recycling, fire safety in the home, bus safety, electricity safety and the dangers of alcohol – all of which were immensely enjoyed by the young people and teachers alike.

Each school received an information pack so that the messages could be further reinforced to the children at a later stage.

The event was organised and funded by Banbridge PCSP with additional funding from Banbridge District Council’s Good Relations Department.

Organisations who took part in this year’s event, giving freely of their time, included the PSNI, officers from Banbridge District Council’s Environmental Health and Technical Services Departments, the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, Translink, NIE and REACT Ltd.
