Cannabis charge man ‘thought he was delivering meat’

A MAN charged with possession of £1m worth of cannabis has told a court he thought he was delivering meat rather than drugs.

Noel McCarville from Ballymun in Dublin was stopped by police while driving a van near Loughbrickland on Monday evening. One hundred kilos of herbal cannabis were discovered in the back of the van, packaged as frozen meat.

The 38-year-old is further charged with possession of the drug with intent to supply.

A police officer told Newry Court that the drugs had arrived in Lisburn from Holland on Monday. The van was heading south from business premises in Lisburn to Ballbriggan in Dublin.

Mr McCarville was refused bail and remanded in custody until May 9.
