Creamery does it's bit for Haiti

BANBRIDGE firm, Armaghdown Creameries Ltd, have done their bit to help the aid effort in Haiti following the earthquake in the country.

The company, which is part of the Fane Valley Group, has donated 2.5 tonnes of high grade full Irish cream milk powder to Christian Aid Ireland for use in the relief operation. It is estimated that the 2.5 tonnes will make 19,000 litres of milk.

The milk was already in neighbouring country, the Dominican Republic when the earthquake hit Haiti last week. It has been handed over to one of Christian Aid’s Dominican partner organisations, Centro Bono, who are currently making arrangements to transport the milk 105km by road across the border into Haiti. They plan to use the milk in a hospital where earthquake victims are being treated.

“We normally do not accept food donations for logistical reasons, but in this case the donation happened to be in the right place at the right time,” said Margaret Boden, CEO Christian Aid Ireland.

Centro Bono, though based in the Dominican Republic, is dedicating 100% of their time to the Haiti relief effort. Speaking about the relief efforts in Haiti, Rafael Jimenez of Centro Bono said he was, “Tremendously encouraged by the resilience and motivation of Haitian communities in the cross border areas where Centro Bono is now operating. The Haitians are taking responsibility for co-operation with the reliefs efforts in Haiti.”

Christian Aid Ireland launched an emergency appeal for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Those wishing to donate can do so on-line at www.christianaid.ie or call 01 611 0801 or 08080 004 004.
