Councillors back Restore project

The scheme was officially launched on Friday 22 June at 12 noon in Thyme Square. Property owners with commercial premises in the project area of Church Street, Bridge Street and Market Square were invited to attend the session to find out more about how the project can benefit both them and the town.

The £150,000 project, which is funded by the Department for Social Development, aims to improve the poor quality environment created by disused vacant properties and derelict sites, strengthen and improve existing retail provision as well as promote Dromore to new visitors and potential investors.

Proposals for the project include a paint scheme for Church Street, window panels for vacant properties, a shop front improvement scheme for independently owned commercial premises, a new garden/seating area on a derelict site in Market Square and tourism information panels and planting in tubs and baskets in Market Square.

The DUP’s Hazel Gamble said, “I attended the information event regarding the Restore project for Dromore town and was very encouraged by the number of business owners in attendance and the positve and enthusastic response to the presentation by the Town Centre Manager.

“I welcome the introduction of the scheme and would encourage as many owners as possible to avail of the grants available to improve the overall apppearance and atmosphere of the town.”

Councillor Carol Black said she was delighted that Dromore had been allocated funds from DSD to regenerate and revitalise the town centre.

“Only last week the Dromore Leader ran a story about the run down town and I was very quick about defending the Banbridge district Council who have been trying to do just that,” she said

“This will not only help the appearance of the place but it is a huge boost for local traders within the town. This scheme is ready to run and I would encourage local traders and property owners to contact Town Centre Manager Mechelle Brown for an application form.”

Her UUP colleague, Councillor Olive Mercer, added, “The project offers financial support to property owners in Church Street, Bridge Street and Dromore Square to help them revitalise and enhance the appearance of their buildings.

“This is an exciting chance to improve the overall frontage of their premises, helping to make Dromore more attractive to visitors and hopefully encourage business investment in the town.”
