Council to write to Director of PPS in bid to recover local jobs

The council is to write to the Director of Public Prosecutions to ask what steps are being taken to ensure that Public Prosecution Service staff who were moved out of Lisburn are brought back into the city.

The move comes in response to the Justice Minister’s decision to reverse her predecessor’s decision to close Lisburn Courthouse as part of a cost-saving exercise. See full story here.

Speaking during the full council meeting on October 25, members welcomed the Minister’s announcement and thanked all those who campaigned for the retention of the city’s courthouse - a move that will keep court services and jobs in the local area, at least for the next four years.

During the discussion, Councillor Scott Carson commented: “Bearing in mind the premature decision by the Public Prosecution Service to remove two floors of staff from Linenhall Street offices, I think it might be appropriate that we write to ask Barra McGrory what action he might be taking now to ensure that more staff will be brought back into Lisburn based on the fact that the courthouse will be retained.”

Members unanimously backed Cllr Carson’s proposal.

Cllr Pat Catney added that the council must go forward with a united voice in order to secure the long-term future of the courthouse and retain local jobs.
