Council ‘reddy’ and willing to help good cause

To show its support for the charity, the council has recently bathed Lagan Valley Island in red lights.

During the month of February the British Heart Foundation (BHF) encouraged everyone to wear something red to help fight Northern Ireland’s single biggest killer, coronary heart disease.

The Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Margaret Tolerton, speaking about the initiative, said: “Lisburn City Council has been working very closely with the British Heart Foundation and local primary school St Colman’s on the areas of heart disease and defibrillators.

“It is very important that as a public body the Council is doing all that it can to ensure that its residents are aware of potential health risks, how to reduce them and what training and support is available to them.

“I am delighted to say that lighting Lagan Valley Island up red is just the start of the work that the Council will be undertaking this year; and I would encourage all residents to support the British Heart Foundation in any way they can.”

Councillor Pat Catney, Chairman of the Council’s Corporate Services Committee added: “The BHF’s ‘Ramp Up the Red’ campaign was very successful with many young children wearing something red to school and making a donation of £1 to do so.

“Lisburn City Council wished to show its support and the most visible way was making its headquarters red for one evening.

“There are many different heart conditions.

“They include angina, heart attack, heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms - as well as other conditions including congenital heart disease and inherited heart conditions.

“I must commend the BHF for the work that it does in this area.
