Council offering a city of culture trip

TO mark this year’s Community Relations Week which runs from May 20-26, Banbridge District Council is offering a trip for up to 30 people to the historic city of Derry-Londonderry on Saturday May 25.

Community Relations week aims to complement Derry/Londonderry’s celebration as the UK City of Culture by showing how a wide range of people from all communities can work together and express their cultural identity.

Participants will take part in a specially organised tour offering them the opportunity to soak up the vibrant, celebratory atmosphere that exists throughout the 2013 City of Culture as well as learn more about the famous 17th century city walls and other sites of historical interest.

The tour, which is led by renowned local guide Gerry Lynn, will offer an entertaining and informative commentary on the complex and turbulent history of the Maiden City, the only intact walled city in Ireland and Britain.

Among other sites, Gerry will accompany the group to the famous city gates, the Diamond, the Guild Hall, and present detailed historical insights into the Siege of Derry and the Battle of the Bogside, as well as discuss the intensive peace and reconciliation work that has taken place in the city over recent years.
