Council mucks in with compost giveaway

Following the success of past “compost give aways”, Banbridge District Council will once again be promoting this highly popular event.

As part of Compost Awareness Week 2014, which takes place from 3 – 10 May, the council will be distributing free compost at each of the Community Recycling Centres in Banbridge, Rathfriland and Dromore on Saturday 3 May 2014 during normal opening times. Compost Awareness week was first established in Canada to promote the home composting of garden and kitchen waste.

Supplied by Natural World Products in Portadown, this compost is made up from the waste that is collected from residents brown bins and the local community recycling centres.

“Making compost is really good for both the environment and home owners,” explains Environmental education officer Tracy Fitzpatrick. “It reduces the need for packaged peat products for the garden and diverts waste from landfill – a win win situation all round”.

“Composting your waste is a good alternative to peat and also saves you money. It is excellent for feeding plants and improves the structure of the soil meaning you will be helping the environment while maintaining a beautiful garden!”

Compost will be given out one bag of compost per person to those residents recycling their garden waste. As there will be a limited supply of compost available, it is recommended that you arrive early to claim your free bag.
