Council to host its first volunteer fair

BANBRIDGE District Council is set to host its first ever volunteer fair in partnership with the Craigavon and Banbridge Volunteer Centre.

This event will be held in Banbridge Leisure Centre on Wednesday 6 October 2010 between 11am and 2pm, and aims to match potential volunteers with local volunteer-recruiting agencies.

Looking ahead to the event, Council Community Development Officer, Robert Stockley, said: “This is a great opportunity for those who, maybe through changes in their life circumstances, find they have some extra time on their hands and wish to help other people through volunteering their time and skills to a particular cause.

"Similarly, in these highly competitive times in the field of employment and accessing higher education, experience gained through volunteering could give an individual the edge when applying for a job or university place.”

So far, over twenty organisations have booked a stand to showcase the volunteering experiences on offer. Among the many organisations taking a stand at the event are Guide Dogs for the Blind, British Red Cross and Barnardos along with many more focusing on a wide range of issues such as health, transport, advice, sport, young people and family support. There will also be an opportunity to find out about volunteering at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Brian Douglas, Recruitment Officer with Craigavon and Banbridge Volunteer Centre, explained the benefits that the event will bring to those organisations taking part.

“We are delighted with the number of agencies who have so far booked a stand at the event. In these times when organisations increasingly recognise the benefit volunteers can bring to their organisation in terms of skills, experience and expertise, an event such as this not only raises their profile amongst the general public, but also their profile among the other agencies in attendance.”

Those attending will also have the opportunity to indulge in some complimentary Indian head massage or beauty therapy. Refreshments will also be provided.
