Cookstown man ‘very lucky’ to be alive following hit and run

The man, who did not wish to be named, told the MAIL how he had to be helped from his vehicle after another car collided with his on the Fairhill Road, at its junction with the Westland Road shortly before 9pm on Friday November 5.

A silver Peugeot 406 and a black Seat Leon were involved in the collision with the male driver of the Leon requiring hospital treatment for neck and back injuries.

“I had to be helped out of the car, it was on its head. I was kept overnight in hospital and sustained muscular injuries but thank God I am here to tell the tale. I was lucky, I was very, very lucky to get out of it alive,” he told the MAIL.

The driver of the Peugeot was not at the scene when police arrived.

A man aged 22 was later arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit, dangerous driving, failing to stop, remain and report an RTC. He has since been released on bail pending further police enquiries.

Inspector Daniel Walsh has appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision or who saw either car being driven in the area in the time leading up to the collision to contact officers in Cookstown on 101.
