Community in mourning after tragic death of Clonoe teenager

Ronan, a pupil at St Joseph’s Donaghmore and player for Clonoe O’Rahillys GAA club, passed away on Friday afternoon.

The son of Gerard and Teresa Hughes from Aughamullan, he also leaves behind his brother Cathal, sister Liza and large family circle.

Clonoe Parish Priest Father Fee paid his respects to the youngster at the blessing of the parish graves on Sunday evening saying Ronan’s death had “cast a very dark cloud over the community”.

Listing every “man, woman and child” the parish has lost over the last year he added: “And last but by no means least, Ronan Hughes who will be laid to rest here on Tuesday morning after 11 o’clock Requiem Mass”.

One minute’s silence was observed before Sunday’s senior championship game between Clonoe and Coalisland in his memory and Clonoe players wore black armbands as a mark of respect to their young player.

Writing on their Facebook page, Clonoe O’Rahilly’s said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of one of our young players Ronan Hughes. A young man full of potential and willingness to learn. We urge any of our players, members who are having difficulties to talk with someone.

“Our coaches are always willing to listen to any young players. Please be vigilant of your children and friends, and look out for one another.”

Ronan’s school, St Joseph’s Grammar School in Donaghmore, is to make teachers available from 9am today at the school for any parents or pupils who wish to speak with them about this tragedy.

District police commander Superintendent Mike Baird said: “Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a 17-year-old schoolboy in the Coole Road area of Coalisland on Friday 5 June.

“A crime is not suspected. Our enquiries into this tragedy are continuing.”
