Community Centre ‘an investment’

The building was described as a “wonderful facility” at the monthly meeting of Banbridge District Council last Monday night and councillors were unanimous in their call for locals to use it to its maximum.

“There has been much investment in this building and I hope and trust it will be well used.” said Councillor John Hanna. “I would encourage both young and old to attend the various activities in it and I hope it gives Gilford a major boost.”

Councillor Sheila McQuaid agreed and said there was a need now to ensure the centre was used to capacity so it would “pay for itself and not be a drain on the ratepayers”.

However, it was pointed out by Councillor Seamus Doyle that the district council was “one pool for everyone”, with Gilford ratepayers having supported projects like Banbridge Swimming Pool and Rathfriland Community Centre in the past.

“Gilford has had many ‘false dawns’ and residents in the town are now only getting what they deserve with this excellent community centre,” said Mr Doyle.

Agreeing with the need to use the facility to its maximum, Councillor Jim McElroy also pointed out that it was due to the efforts of Environmental Services director, David Lindsay, that savings of around £4,000 had been made from recycling initiatives - and this in turn had helped keep rates costs to a minimum.
