City firm get £215k to drive rural access

A NEW investment of £215,432 has been granted to a Londonderry-based firm to improve access to broadband in rural areas across Northern Ireland.

The funding has been awarded to North West Electronics through the £1.9million Northern Ireland Broadband Fund, which is co-financed under the European Regional Development Fund Sustainable Competitiveness Programme 2007-2013.

North West Electronics, which has previously received assistance under the Broadband Fund, will extend its existing fixed wireless network to offer a range of broadband services to business and residential customers in the Dungannon, Larne, Antrim, Fermanagh, Down, Armagh, Ballymena and Newry and Mourne areas.

Arlene Foster said: “This investment is continued evidence of my Department’s commitment to ensuring that all areas of Northern Ireland have access to superfast broadband services.

“There are areas of Northern Ireland where a fixed line solution is not possible for technical and commercial reasons. The Broadband Fund enables local businesses to demonstrate how a range of technologies can deliver broadband services to rural users.”
