Children Heart and Surgery service ‘must be saved’

COLERAINE Sinn Fein councillor, Ciaran Archibald, has expressed his dismay at the recommendations by the UK Safe and Sustainable Team to close the heart surgery department at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

Cllr Archibald said: “This would not only end heart surgery for our children but would put at risk all intervention stabilising and lifesaving emergency procedures.

“Effectively this would mean that all children with heart problems from the north of Ireland would be forced to travel to a centre in the UK for treatment.

Cllr Archibald has called on the local community to lobby the Health Minister and add their voice to opposition of the recommendations made by the Safe and Sustainable Team.

“I would encourage everyone to support this work and campaign against this decision to close the heart surgery facility at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.”
