The A1 between Dromore and Banbridge has been closed after the serious crash

The crash happened when two cars collided on the A1 dual carriageway at around 5.30pm. the road was reopened early this morning (Monday).

The driver of one car was taken away in an ambulance but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

UUP councillor Carol Black said she understands that all three men were aged in their 20s.

Assistant Chief Constable Stephen Martin said on Twitter last night: “Truly awful RTC this evening on the A1. Three men tragically killed. Weather and road conditions are very bad – please drive carefully.”

Last night the A1 was closed in both directions between Banbridge and Dromore, creating long tailbacks.

Police said the road was expected to remain closed into this morning’s rush hour and diversions will be in place.

A PSNI spokesperson warned drivers to be attentive while following diversions.

“Police would advise motorists, especially heavy goods vehicles, to exercise caution and patience on these more minor roads due to flooding in the area. Alternative routes should be sought, if at all possible.”

Road conditions across the Province were challenging yesterday amid heavy rainfall.
