Cattle kept in ‘appalling conditions’

Mr RODNEY Thomas Clarke, Glenavy Road, Magheragall, Lisburn, was convicted at Lisburn Magistrates’ Court on September 18 of one charge under the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 1972 and five charges under the Welfare of Farmed Animals Regulations (NI) 2000.

This case involved cattle being kept in appalling conditions, without a clean, dry lying area, adequate water, appropriate feed and veterinary advice as soon as possible for animals which required it. DARD Veterinary Officers and Inspectors had to visit the farm, numerous times over a two week period to ensure the welfare of the cattle and compliance with the Regulations.

Mr Clarke pleaded guilty and was fined £3,000 plus £22 costs.
