Carnmoney Cemetery theft: Police appeal for information

The brown handbag, which contained cash and medication, was stolen from the car between noon and 12:20pm.

This latest incident comes on the back of a number of thefts which have occurred over recent months at both Carnmoney and Ballyclare Cemeteries.

Sergeant Stevie Moore said: “This is a despicable crime and we would be keen to hear from anyone who could assist in identifying the culprit or returning the handbag. In the meantime, we would strongly urge anyone visiting the local graveyards or attending church services to not leave valuables in their cars. Take everything with you or store away out of sight.”

Anyone who was in the area and could help police with their enquiries is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting 560 of 17/06/16.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr John Scott is encouraging everyone to be vigilant. He said: “Visiting the grave of a loved one can be a very emotional time and the last thing that anyone wants is to return to their car to find their personal property has been stolen. We have been working closely with the PSNI and our borough wardens to increase their patrols in the area, but I would encourage everyone to ensure their vehicles are locked and that all personal belongings and valuables are kept out of sight.”
