The total was all the more impressive, say members, for coming against a backdropof ever greater demands on public generosity.

What would later become the Dromore group of Cancer Focus, formerly the Ulster Cancer Foundation, first met in town some 50 years ago, when it was the only such group locally and fewer charities were hoping for a share of donations.

Today’s honorary secretary, Maureen Mackey, thanked the people of the wider Dromore area for their continued support.

She added: “Special thanks go to the Poole family of SuperValu, Dromore, for the day-long use of their premises.

“It is greatly appreciated, particularly at a time when collecting from door to door across a wide rural area is becoming more and more challenging.”

Maureen stressed that all funds raised for Cancer Focus were spent in Northern Ireland, on research and care provision.
