Canal talk at library
AN interesting and informative programme of meetings has now been arranged by the committee for the ensuing year, starting off with an illustrated talk by Mr Brian Cassells.
Mr Cassells has a wealth of knowledge on the many waterways of Ulster and at the meeting will be concentrating on the Newry to Portadown Canal which passes through Scarva.
The main reason for building this canal was the discovery of coal deposits at Coalisland and the need to transport them quickly to Newry and on to Dublin. It is the oldest summit canal in the British Isles, having been built in 1742.
The meeting begins at 7.15pm in Banbridge Public Library on Thursday September 1 and visitors are most welcome.
