In what has been an ongoing issue, residents have aired their frustrations online and called for a solution to the speeding problem in the area.

Posting on social media, Michael Cready said: “Looking to get an online petition set up to bring in speed humps/pillows on the Scarva Road between Limewood and the chapel.

“One of the busiest roads in Banbridge and two schools to boot. So many cars doing 40mph in a 30mph zone at school times. If the Ballygowan Road warrants them then why should Scarva Road be any different!?”

Michael’s post last week echoes others which have been made over the past month.

Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson said this was a problem the whole town was dealing with and pledged to raise the issue again with the PSNI District Commander.

She said: “A number of weeks back I welcomed assurances from the PSNI that the number of unmarked patrols would increase in the town. This was following concerns which I raised around speeding on behalf of residents across the town, particularly on the Rathfriland Road.

“For some time the town has been plagued with nuisance drivers who are driving dangerously, nosily and presenting a danger to pedestrians, road users and to themselves!

“I share the concerns around speeding which have been raised with me by residents of the Scarva Road and will raise the particular issue with the District Commander.

“I am also concerned about speeding traffic in and around our schools and the clear danger which this poses. I have repeatedly raised this issue with the appropriate authorities and will continue to do so on behalf of a number of local schools and their Boards of Governors.

“The safety of school pupils and young children should be the number one priority and the recent reduction in crossing patrols by the Education Authority at some schools is also a deeply worrying trend.
