Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson has demanded the Department of Agriculture speed up the process of making compensation payments to farmers.
Mrs Dobson, the UUP Agriculture spokesperson was making her comment following recent discussions with sheep farmers about the slow payment of compensation following the heavy snowfall earlier this year.
She said, “NIE’s recent announcement that it will not be paying compensation to those whose power was cut off adds insult to injury. I have written to the management at NIE to express my concern that this shows a callous disregard for their customers who live and work in rural areas.
“I am calling on the Minister of Agriculture to make those payments into farmer’s bank accounts. This would enable them to look to the future of their businesses and not be held back because of the grindingly slow administration in the Department.”
