Brian Boyd enjoying dream season as he picks up second major trophy

Back in March, he won the Bill McMaster Memorial Cup and on Saturday 18 July, he won the Fred Daly Memorial Trophy.

Some people dream of winning one major trophy in their lifetime and here we have Brian winning two in the space of four months.

Brian’s victory was a narrow one. He had 42 points and he won on countback from three other players.

Callum Barnes (6) was runner-up with his 42 points. Callum certainly gave it his best shot, going round in level par 69.

Paul McAleavey (7) won the low section (0-12) with yet another 42 points.

Paul has been a top-notch player for many years and he has been rewarded with a place on the Carlingford Cup team.

Jonathan Shannon (6), one of the best iron players in the club, was second in the low section with 39 points.

Gordon Cruikshanks (14) won the middle section (13-17) and he too had 42 points. It was a case of “so near and yet so far.”

Dennis Watt (17) was runner-up to Gordon with 40 points.

Alan Herron (25) won the high section (18+) with an excellent 41 points.

The ever-dependable Norman Doak (18) was second best high handicapper with 40 points.

Like a lot of others, the last four holes, sometimes referred to as the “bear pit”, were Norman’s downfall.

William Malcolmson (6) won the best gross prize with a 70 and the prize for the best senior player went to the ever-young Dennis Lockhart (14) with 40 points.

Two points separated nine of the prizewinners. It could hardly have been much closer.
