Breastfeeding awareness events this month

TO mark Breastfeeding Awareness week between June 25 and 29, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust has teamed up with support groups to host a number of events across the area for mothers and mums-to-be.

Having information about the benefits of breast feeding early in pregnancy can support a mother’s decision to breastfeed.

The events will give women the chance to speak to each other and receive information from breastfeeding peer support workers, Surestart, Uplift and other breastfeeding support groups. Trust midwives, health visitors, dieticians and dental health staff will also be on hand to offer information and advice.

Breastfeeding has many health benefits for both mum and baby: breastfed babies are less likely to have many illnesses, including stomach, chest and ear infections, asthma, diabetes and obesity.

Breast milk protects premature babies against serious bowel disorders and can contribute towards better eyesight and brain development. Mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer and osteoporosis in later life.

There will be a coffee morning on Monday June 25 at Banbridge Rugby Club between 10am and 12 noon.

Another coffee morning will be held at Daisy Hill Hospital in the Antenatal Education room on Thursday June 28 between 11am and 12.30pm.
