Best of the Borough

The Awards ceremony was organised by Council to give special recognition to the many groups and organisations whose members selflessly give up their free time and energy for the betterment of their local community.

Council welcomed nominations for groups who have made and continue to make a significant contribution to their local area. There were five categories in which a group could be nominated, including, Community Development, Good Relations, Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Health and Well Being and new to this year, a Youth Activities Category.

The 2013 Community Endeavour Awards were presented to the following groups: Castlerock Community Association for the Community Development Group Award; The Good Relations Award was presented to Ulster Project Delaware; Garvagh Clydesdale & Vintage Club received the award in the Policing & Community Safety Partnership Category.

The Health and Well Being Award went to Coleraine and District Samaritans and finally, the Youth Activities Award was given to Portrush Sea Cadets, T.S. Duke of York.

Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Sam Cole said: “The Community Endeavour Awards are Council’s way of recognising and rewarding so many dedicated voluntary and community organisations and individuals in the Borough who play a vital role in our society. Now in it’s third year running, this event has proven a big success and Council believes it is important to reward nominees for their hard work and dedication.”

Coleraine Borough Council, Community Development Manager Julie Welsh, was delighted by the positive response to this, Council’s third year of the Community Endeavour Awards.

She said: “Our previous Community Endeavour Awards were a huge success and this year has proven to be even more popular and has again received a great deal of support and enthusiasm from all those involved. Council was eager to highlight the many hours of voluntary commitment that committees, groups and volunteers dedicate to improving their local communities.

“Voluntary and community organisations play a vital role in society today, including lobbying for improved access to services, providing social and educational opportunities for local residents, providing personal development opportunities for young people and improving good relations within and between communities.

“Community development and building good relations can often be very challenging and Council endeavours to take every opportunity to encourage people engaged in this work, praising, recognising and supporting their effort.”
