Anne Mallon organised the fundraiser at St Colman’s in memory of her husband Vincent as she was determined that others should benefit from research just as he had.

Vincent spent six hard-fought years attending the Cancer Centre at the Belfast City Hospital, but Anne said: “My husband would have died before this if it hadn’t been for research.

“Vincie isn’t here any more, but I want others to benefit now from research too.

“I know we’re not the only family affected for you see all sorts who have been diagnosed with cancer - from young boys to father’s with young babies.

“My aim now is to raise as much money as I can for research.”

About 120 people came to the afternoon tea and Anne said: “I used china that I’d got as wedding presents that had hardly ever had tea in them before.

“We also had china teapots and the whole works - we got teapots from everybody, for everybody arrived with them and friends and family baked scones and made sandwiches.

“Everybody told me they loved it. It was exhausting but good. We raised over £2000 and people are still dropping money into me.”
