Band’s new uniform honours ex-member

The uniform was donated by Billy’s daughter Susan Stevenson while the presentation was made by Billy’s granddaughter, Suzanne.

The uniform was dedicated by the Reverend Charles McCurdy.

The chairman of the platform party, Mr Edward Patterson outlined the attributes of the band which had made it successful over the years.

He referred to the close knit family membership of the band and its relationship with Benraw Orande Lodge, Black Preceptory and the Rural Community Association. The chairman also commended the band’s efforts to attend regular band practice and its ability to provide the necessary finance to support its ongoing expenditure.

Suzanne Stevenson-Napier, in her presentation speech, informed the audience that she was speaking on behalf of her Aunt Susan who could not be present for the event. Suzanne then referred to her grandfather Billy and his dedication and loyalty to the band over the years. She also read aloud the names of the 19 founding members of the band in 1946: Guthery Hanna; Arnold Hanna; Robbie Bradford; Hugh Brown; Beth Campbell; Sam Campbell; John Clinghan; Willy Dalzell; Gavin Gibson; Willy Herron; Ivor Herron; James Herron; Evy McCracken; James McCracken; Robert McElroy; Jim Porter; W.J. Stewart; Joseph Whiteside and William Stevenson.

Suzanne concluded her speech by thanking Joe and Iris Gibson, Stephen and Louise Harte and her mother Hilda, for helping to organise the event and Stephen for his research and photographs and extended thanks to her Aunt Susan for asking her to do the presentation on her behalf.

Suzanne then received flowers from the youngest members of the band, Victoria Harte and Scott Stevenson. The appeal was made by Samuel McConnell and Benraw Highland Pipe Band played a selection of music while the collection was made.

Legnanny Accordian Band played at the platform, while a vote of thanks was made by the band chairman, Jim Martin, with special mention being made to

Susan Stevenson for her very kind donation. The vote of thanks was seconded by drum sergeant, James Hilland.

Following the national Anthem the audience and platform party were entertained to a light tea in the Orange Hall followed by a disco.
