At a special awards ceremony held in Carrickfergus on Thursday March 27, Banbridge was announced as winner of the Town category and Scarva picked up gold for Best Small Village.

Seapatrick was also awarded a highly acclaimed third place in the Small Village category.

Last year marked the 35th year of the Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition which is co-ordinated by the Northern Ireland Local Government Association. This year’s competition attracted a total of 145 entries representing local councils, businesses, community groups and bus/rail stations.

Speaking of the latest in a long line of awards for the area, Banbridge District Council Environmental Services Committee Chairman, Councillor Brendan Curran, declared: “It was an absolute delight to win not one, but two categories in this year’s Ulster in Bloom Awards.

“The council and our local communities place a very high importance and value on the standards of maintenance and presentation of our outdoor environments and it is great to see this recognised by independent, external judges”.

With just 12 months to go before the ‘Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon’ super-council comes into being, Council Chairman, Olive Mercer, underlined that councillors will be striving to bring such success into the new amalgamated Council and said: “taking pride in the appearance of our towns and villages, whether it be in the form of floral displays, maintenance of green areas or ensuring absence of litter, is so important to the quality of life for our residents and the attractiveness of the district for visitors”.

Alderman Arnold Hatch, President of the Northern Ireland Local Government Association, thanked and congratulated all the councils, ‘In – Bloom’ committees and sponsors.
